2004 pontiac grand prix non turbo 3.8 stalling

ok bb lets talk. - fuel pressure 160 - no codes or check engine light - refueling / putting gas in the tank seems to be restricted . starts and runs - shuts down after 5 or 10 mins but restarts - coil packs replaced because one had heat cracks and ecm replaced - crank sensor replaced earlier in the year. vehicle not at my location but interested in your opinion. - any ideas?

what would cause the

what would cause the restricted fueling issue all of a sudden? has 138000 miles on it. haven't removed the fuel fill tube yet but someone may have stuffed something in it at my granddaughter's college apartment.

Wild weasel, Hey

Wild weasel,

Hey brother,

Fuel pressure is 160 but where in the line is it 160? In other words before or after the fuel filter?

Is it 160 at the rail?

Has the fuel filter been replaced recently?

Have issues with the “Fuel Pressure Regulator” been ruled out?

Have “Fuel Pump Relay” issues been ruled out?

Have frozen fuel lines been ruled out?

Has damage to the fuel lines been ruled out? (bends or kinks for example)

Any:

Blown fuses?
Blown master fuses?
Blown fusible links?
Blown Circuit Breakers?

Are ALL the injectors firing? Check with a “Noid Light” if necessary.

Is “Exhaust System Backpressure” Excessive? Check with “Back Pressure Tester” (and or) “Engine Vacuum Pressure Tester”.

Have more for you weasel, but get back to me with answers to ALL the above.

BTW:

No gettin around it brother.
You gotta pull that filler tube.

Could be some ASS HOLES idea of a joke and stuffed something down the filler tube.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

wow, I know the pressure was

wow, I know the pressure was tested at the rail and passed along the info you sent. thanks, will let you know when I find out.
GOD BLESS ALL OF OUR VETERANS, EVEN YOU BB.
it's 85 deg here think we can rule out frozen lines.

You’re welcome brother. Glad

You’re welcome brother.
Glad to help you out.
Help you out anytime.
You can count on it.
Semper Fidelis remember?
Couple of things.

First. You never posted your granddaughters location, so I had no way of knowing she was in 85 degrees.

Second. is as veteran its hard for me to understand why you don’t understand the “Unspoken Truth” that veterans know and understand.

In other words when I say GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS I’m also saying GOD BLESS ALL OUR ARMED FORCES AND VETERANS, without having to say it.

Shouldn’t have to spell it for you this way.
You should just know and understand it.
It was decade’s ago brother.

Maybe it was you who had my back up there in your F-100 Super Sabres or Douglas A-4 Skyhawk.

Just naming two planes off the top of my head.
We both know there were more planes

Maybe it wasn’t you up there.
Doesn’t matter my brother.
Point is we were all on the same team.
Doing what we had to do.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

Weasel, Had a really busy day

Weasel,

Had a really busy day yesterday.
Meant to post this along with my answer but just forgot.
Sorry brother.

The fuel psi reading you got (160) is WRONG.
Proper pressure on the said vehicle is 55 to 65.

Reasons you got a pressure of 160:

Fuel pressure regulator issues.
Cheap gauge.
Gauge is defective.
Gauge is NOT designed for electric fuel pumps.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

you are correct. got the

you are correct. got the reading 2nd hand and they added a hundred to it. thanks

You're welcome

You're welcome brother.
Anytime.
Keep me updated.

OBVIOUSLY the second hand information you’re getting is coming from an UNQUALIFIED FOOL. Why else would he (or she) add 100 to the fuel psi?

That raises the question of WHAT ELSE IS THIS UNQUALIFIED FOOL IS GETTING WRONG?

Codes for example:

Is the UNQUALIFIED FOOL ASSUMING that there are no codes because the check engine light is NOT on?

Most likely the UNQUALIFIED FOOL DOESN’T KNOW TO IGNORE the check engine light and just do a scan.

It’s your granddaughter brother.
Stop relying on second hand information from an UNQUALIFIED FOOL.
Get over there and check things out for yourself.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

the fool of which you speak

the fool of which you speak is my son. the scan has been done even though there is no lite. my son is a very busy guy with a lot on his plate and the mechanic is his son in law with his own shop and trying to fit this in between jobs. he is very competent and will get it right sooner or later. glad you are so patient / brilliant and such a superior mechanic with the time to criticize. none the less I bow to your knowledge and expertise. the car is in good hands, just wanted your opinion on possible cause but can do without your demeaning remarks. forget I asked.

Wild weasel, Have no patience

Wild weasel,

Have no patience for incompetence and stupidity.
Especially in this business.
ONE bad mechanic makes us ALL look bad.
Sorry but you're partly to blame here brother.
You NEVER posted that the mechanic was your son.
NEVER NEVER would have said what I said had I known it was your son.
REALLY SORRY BROTHER!!!

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

Hello Jerryh20, I’m still in

Hello Jerryh20,

I’m still in the learning stage and don’t feel I’m qualified enough to offer any auto repair information. I come to this forum to read and learn from the answers provided by Big Block 409. He’s incredible his knowledge and skills are astounding. I’ve been following this thread, and see that you haven’t posted any updates. Has the problem been fixed or are you still working on a resolution? If it has been fixed can you please post what the remedy was so that I may learn? Thank you.

Hey Kevin how are you? Thank

Hey Kevin how are you?

Thank you for the compliment.
Glad to hear that you use the forum as a reference.
Keep coming here buddy.
You can rest assured I won’t let you down.

Based on past times I can tell you that, you never know with Jerry. In other words, there have been times where he WILL post an update, and then there are times when he WON’T post an update.

Doesn’t matter.
I’m here.
Got questions???
No problem.
Just post your questions.
I have the answers.

Here’s a “Pop Quiz” for you buddy. Answering this question correctly will demonstrate to me that your head is more than an “Ear Separator”. :)

Jerry’s FAILED to post some CRITICAL information in ALL his postings.
This information could have led to a QUICK resolution to the issue with Jerry’s granddaughter’s car. What is that critical information???

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

Big Block Thank you for this.

Big Block Thank you for this. I need questions like this to help me learn. I don't ever see myself being like you and knowing what you know, but I do expect to learn enough to work on my own cars. Please give me some time to come up with an answer to this. I will post my answer when I come up with something that is worth reading. I just don't want to post anything that sounds stupid and is wrong. Thank you for being a member of this forum, and for all the time and effort you put into the forum. I personally want to thank you. I have learned so much from you. God Bless You Always, and yes God Bless The United States Marine Corps Always.

Kevin, Hey men don’t worry

Kevin,

Hey men don’t worry about it.
Got it.
Understood.
Take all the time you need.
I check out this forum several times a day.

Thing is don’t be ashamed or embarrassed to post what you think. Even if what you post it’s wrong (and or) doesn’t make any sense, I’m here and will correct it. I can teach you a lot more, but I need to know what you’re thinking.

Here’s another test question for you to answer, after you answer the first one I posted.

(Jerryh20 said) starts and runs - shuts down after 5 or 10 mins but restarts

What is wrong with Jerry’s statement???

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

Oh God Big Block please take

Oh God Big Block please take pity on me and have some mercy on me with these questions. Im still working on your first question, and just approaching the half way mark with the answer.

Kevin, Hey buddy I checked

Kevin,

Hey buddy I checked the forum this morning at 7 AM.
Didn’t see an answer from you.
Just checked again now and saw your latest answer.

Look man I’m gonna give you all the time you need to answer my questions. Just post something so I can get a sense of your “Skill Level” and so I know what you’re thinking.

REMEMBER with Jerry’s type of issue the basics:

MUST BE RULED OUT FIRST BEFORE YOU GO LOOKING FOR A BIGGER PROBLEM!!!

I covered those basics in my first few answers to Jerry. Jerry still hasn’t posted back with any updates (and or) if a resolution was found. More than likely he won’t be posting back. For that matter he could still be working on the problem.

Doesnt matter man.
We don't need Jerry.
We can move on, and I can teach you without Jerry.

The below is very simple, basic and fundamental.
SHAME ON ANY mechanic who doesn’t know it.
Since you’re learning I’m gonna keep it very simple.

Could very easily write an encyclopedia on the subject, but I really don’t want to “Fry Your Brain".

When adding fuel to a motor vehicles fuel tank, if the fuel seems slow going into the tank (and or) restricted it is because the charcoal canister is not venting the fuel vapor pressure from the fuel tank as fuel is entering the tank.

Common causes for this are issues with the “Vapor Recovery Valve” located on the fuel tank. The valve could be sticking, and not allowing the vapor to push over to the charcoal canister.

Another possibility is that the “Valve Drain Hose” is clogged with debris (and or) kinked. If clogged with debris, the debris won’t allow the diaphragm in the valve to open correctly and allow the pressure to vent out the charcoal canister.

Inspect the drain hose and the charcoal canister diaphragm where it attaches to see if it's clogged (and or kinked). If the hose checks out, then you need to disconnect the hose to the on board vapor recovery valve.

The connection could be at the top of the tank or at the charcoal canister itself. Now try filling up the tank. If the tank fills up normally (with no restriction) (and or) NOT slowly, then you know the problem is in the canister and NOT with the valve at the tank.

Check out this link.

Ok Big Block here's the

Ok Big Block here's the answer to your first question. I tried my best, so please don't be too hard on me.

The son in-law seems lost and desperate to find a resolution to the issue. As a result, he just “Shot Gunned” a-lot of parts. I learned that term (Shot gunning) from you. Thank you for teaching it to me. You have said countless times that “Shot Gunning” parts is just a waste of time and money, and that any part should never be replaced until it is checked, and confirmed to be defective. With this being said, Jerry never posted the tests that were done, and what the son in-law “Ruled Out”. Ruled out being another term I learned from you and again thank you for teaching it to me.

Kevin, Hey buddy just saw

Kevin,

Hey buddy just saw your last answer.
Good answer man.
In my classroom your answer would get an “A”.
Tell you why it’s NOT worth an “A Plus”.
Just can’t tell you now.
No time for me to sit and type out all you need to know.
Really crazy busy here now.
Cars are all over the place.
Have to get these jobs done and cars out of here before Easter.

Just keep watching the forum for the rest of today, and all weekend long for my answer.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

Kevin, Ok buddy great

Kevin,

Ok buddy great job.

Your answer shows me you were using the common sense you were born with. Better than 50% of automotive repair and the science of automotive technology is nothing more than just pure common sense and logic. Everyone is born with common sense, but very few use it. The same can be said for thinking logically.

You got an “A” because you are right. Jerry FAILED to post what tests were done, and what was ruled out (if anything). Knowing what tests were done, and what was ruled out, would have PAID A CRITICAL ROLE in helping to determine the EXACT CAUSE of Jerry’s issue.

You DIDN’T get an “A+ because you stated that the mechanic was “Lost and Desperate”.

He wasn’t lost and desperate.
He was FRUSTRATED due to his own lack of knowledge and skill.
That led to him to GUESSING and “Shot Gunning”parts.
This is evident in Jerry’s OWN statement.
Read it for yourself.
Appears below.

Submitted by jerryh20 on Tue, 03/21/2017 - 09:18.

(Jerry said) and will get it right sooner or later.

The OPERATIVE words being “Sooner or Later”.
Sooner or later speaks for itself man.
Just another way of saying GUESSING.

Again don't worry.
The MARINES are here :) :).
Take all the time you need for the answer to question 2.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

WOW Big Block thank you. Life

WOW Big Block thank you. Life is good again now that I got your approval. I take this very seriously, and really want to learn. You can’t imagine how I was stressing over this. This is really important to me. You really boosted my confidence. I’m working on the answer for question number two. Should be posting something in the coming days. Again thank you so much, and God Bless you and the U.S. Marine corps.

YOU’RE welcome Kevin. MY

YOU’RE welcome Kevin.

MY pleasure and thank you.
APPRECIATE your words.
REALLY IS A LONG overdue and WELCOME change for me.
In other words, MOST (not all) of the people I deal with are IDIOTS.
True for students, customers, AND fellow mechanics.
They just DON’T know any better.
They just DON’T see it.
Most likely NEVER will.

In other words, they have NO CLUE as to how and where to begin to use the “Logic And Common Sense” they were BORN WITH.

You’re UP THERE with us man.
The FEW THE PROUD.
NO I don’t mean MARINES.

I mean the TOP FEW HALF PERCENT of the public who THINK with the “Logic And Common Sense” they were BORN WITH.

Pleasure to know you.
Pleasure to teach you.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

Ok big Block. I really

Ok big Block. I really sweated and stressed out with this. This is my best answer. With respect to your second question. Jerryh20 made the statement:

starts and runs - shuts down after 5 or 10 minutes but restarts.

You took that statement and turned into a question, and wanted to know what was wrong with the statement?

Well if you take the statement for face value you will see that there is nothing wrong with it. However if you apply your theme of common sense and logic to the statement, anyone can see that Jerry’s statement is severely flawed, and derived without the use of common sense and logic, for the reasons below.

1. For example. In a 2 hour driving period. Does the car stall and restart every 5 or 10 minutes and then run fine for the rest of the 2 hour period, or will the car stall and restart again and again and again and again every 5 or 10 minutes, until the 2 hour period is met?

2. When the car stalls what is not reaching the spark plugs. Is it fuel, is it ignition (aka spark) or is it both, fuel and spark?

You have said on this forum countless times, and it is so true and is rooted in common sense and logic. That when an individual is writing in with a description of their auto repair issue, and looking for repair help, that they need to be thorough and complete in their description of the problem, because you don’t have their vehicle in front you. Again just some common sense and logic that points to the obvious, because this is an on-line auto repair forum.

Kevin, Hey man GREAT

Kevin,

Hey man GREAT job.
Giving you an “A+”.
Thought you were done right?
Not yet buddy :) :).

Since you are SO smart and FULL OF SO MUCH “Common Sense And Logic” here’s something else for you to work on.

Below are two of Jerryh20’s statements.
WHAT are they INDICATIVE of?

Submitted by jerryh20 on Mon, 03/20/2017 - 12:03

refueling / putting gas in the tank seems to be restricted .

starts and runs - shuts down after 5 or 10 mins but restarts.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

Big Block indicative? not

Big Block indicative? not sure what you mean. Just please give me some time to try to figure this out. Thank you.

Kevin, Look man don’t let the

Kevin,

Look man don’t let the word “Indicative” throw you.
Concentrate.
Stay focused.
I’m using a VERY BASIC “Teaching Method” here.
Not much different than the method your instructor uses.
Just try to pickup where Jerry left off.
Jerry is telling you something with these statements.
He’s saying it “Loud And Clear”.
It’s obvious and apparent.
More than likely Jerry himself doesn’t even realize it.

Just look in between the words of the statements for what Jerry is saying here.

Think “Common Sense And Logic” buddy.
You’ll thank me in the end.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

Ok boys and girls. Full metal

Ok boys and girls.

Full metal jacket.
Lock and load.
Get into your seats.
Say nothing and just pay attention.
Take notes.
Class is in session.
I know there are quite a few of you out there that use this forum as a reference.
That’s good.
I’m glad to hear it.
Keep coming to the forum.
Keep reading my answers so you can learn.
Rest assured that I willl not disappoint you.

Remember (and especially in the science of automotive technology and repair) that knowledge is power.

As a convenience for all you readers, and for your benefit I’m going to take this time to post a recap as to where we stand with the issue presented by Jerryh20. Granted Jerry’s postings were incomplete and lacked critical details. Furthermore Jerry has not posted any updates (and or) if his issue continues to go unresolved. All that doesn’t matter. Until there is any further news (which there most likely won’t be) from Jerry we’re going to treat this as a “Fuel System Evaporation Issue. READ AND LEARN from the links below.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

Ok Big Block I got it. First

Ok Big Block I got it. First I would like to say thank you for your time and patience and for, not only teaching me, but for teaching all the people on this forum so much. I hope everyone on this forum realizes what they have in you and appreciates your vast and never-ending knowledge.

What you are saying about common sense and logic, and using the common sense and logic you are born with is becoming clearer and more evident to me every day.

I’m 44 years old and attend a commercial trade school; I study automotive technology, and am almost finished with my first year. The course is two years long, and I want you to know, that I have learned more from you than all the time that I’ve been in this school.

My instructors have years of experience. I told them about this forum. They’ve been here and read your answers and they are in complete awe of you.

Ok so here it is. Jerry’s two statements are indicative of two separate issues. Thank you sir. God bless your sir, and may God always bless the United States Marine Corps.

Kevin, I get compliments all

Kevin,

I get compliments all the time.
Countless over the decades.
They never stop coming.

After all these decades and all the compliments you would think I would know how to respond to them right?

Well I don’t.
Compliments still make me feel awkward.
All I can say is THANK YOU AND I APPRECIATE IT GREATLY.

You are correct.
Jerry’s statements are indicative of two issues.
I’m giving you an “A”.
Want an “A Plus”?
Then tell me WHY his statements are indicative of two issues???

AND:

Are the issues RELATED or are they SEPERATE???

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

Big Block. I took the common

Big Block. I took the common sense and logic approach and think I have the why part figured out. Need more time for the related or separate part. Thank you for not making this easy and for forcing me to think very hard.

Take your time.
